Hui Kamaʻilio

Our Mission

Conversation is key to language development. As we learn to speak ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, our mission is simply to learn some history and culture of Hawaiʻi and use that knowledge to further our fluency in this native language. Through Hui Kamaʻilio, we provide space that allows Hawaiian language learners to assimilate their knowledge, integrating a variety of cognitive skills to produce oral communication.

“My Aupuni Palapala sessions have been so beneficial to me for my moʻopuna and haumāna. It was so enlightening to feel the importance of our Hawaiian learning as a collective.”

— ʻAkanē Pōhai, Kealakehe Elementary School PCNC

Aloha! I am Kaʻula Krug from Waiʻanae, Oʻahu. I am a Hawaiian language student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. I am also a staff member at Aupuni Palapala. I am one of the instructors of the Hui Kamaʻilio sessions. This Hawaiian language class was held throughout the whole Spring 2021 semester. It was my first experience teaching a class of adults and that experience helped me grow as a teacher and as an instructor. The students were great to me and Ikaika and they were very nice and patient with us. I’ve learned a lot and devoloped many skills to improve my teaching skills and create a better environment for my students. I am thankful to see the love our people have for our language. Aloha nui kākou.

No Kanaio, Honuaʻula, Maui. He haumāna laepua au ma lalo o ka malu o Kawaihuelani ma ke Kulanui ʻo Hawaiʻi ma Mānoa. ʻO ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi a me ka Mele Hawaiʻi kaʻu mau mēkia. He limahana hoʻi au no Aupuni Palapala.

Not only has Hui Kamaʻilio stregnthened my own language ability, but it also allowed space for growth in knowledge about culture, history as well as communication skills. Within this hui, we practiced reading, writing, conversing, creating and so much more to increase our skill in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. While some participants were beginners and others more advanced, we found a common ground that still provided room to grow and discuss the future of our language in the education systems. Hui Kamaʻilio is all profession development is about!
